Marketing YOU!

Marketing YOU!

The other day my wife sent me on an errand to her salon. When I walked in, I was struck by how polished everything was—the décor, the smells, the staff. The stylists looked like they had stepped out of a fashion magazine: trendy hair, manicured nails, stylish clothes, jewelry. Even though I was out of my element, I quickly realized something: they were marketing themselves.

Their business depends on the confidence customers feel the moment they walk in. By showing proof of their skill in their own appearance and environment, they build trust before ever picking up a pair of scissors.

Now, let’s compare that to our pet grooming salons. Too often, I’ve visited shops with odors, hair on every surface, dirty windows, or worse. And sometimes it’s not just the environment—it’s us. Bed head, cigarette smells, sloppy clothes, foul language, or showing up late all send the wrong message.

The truth is: your number one marketing tool is YOU. Customers are already nervous leaving their pets in someone else’s care. They want to feel confident in you, your shop, and your professionalism.

Here are a few ways to market yourself:

  • Keep your salon clean and welcoming—pay attention to the details.
  • Present yourself with pride. You don’t have to look like a model, but you do need to look professional.
  • Show respect in how you speak, act, and treat your clients (and their pets).

Everyone is beautiful in their own way. The only true “ugly” is not trying. Take pride in your appearance and your environment
