Dryer Maintenance 101

Some of the most important pieces of equipment groomers use everyday are dryers. Whether you use a stand dryer and/or high velocity dryer, daily maintenance is key to long-lasting equipment.

Both the stand and the high velocity dryer should have their filters cleaned daily. If they are in a salon and out in the open, they really should be cleaned after every dog to keep dirt, dander and hair from building up in the unit. I usually vacuum the filter after every dog, and at the end of the day, I take the filter off and rinse it with water.

If you can mount your force dryers, they will run more efficiently while accumulating less hair, which heats up the dryer and motor.

On both the stand and high velocity dryers, it’s important to keep the brushes changed regularly. I do this maintenance once a year, but you may need to do it more or less depending on the dryer’s usage and environment. Most are easy to change by removing a few screws, but it’s also a good idea to send them back to the manufacturer for maintenance and have them look at the wires, plugs and switches.

For stand dryers, I also make sure I clean and blow out the hair around the wheels on the base as they will stop rolling as the hair gathers around them.
